Sat. Wrap: T&F highlights; long day for SB, Tennis

St. Thomas Women's Tennis had three especially close battles in Saturday's 7-0 road loss at Division I Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Taylor and Paige McLeod lost 6-2 at first doubles. Paige McLeod lost a 6-3, 7-6 battle at second singles. Natasha Hood lost 6-2, 7-5 at third singles.
"Thanks to Coach Sagers at Northern Iowa for hosting us today and getting us on their schedule going forward last week they were playing the Iowa Hawkeyes," said Tommie head coach Ken Cychosz. "I thought our players competed exceptionally well against a Division I opponent. We were in position to win three of the nine matches. The women have a reason to be extremely excited today."
The Tommies are slated to compete again in two weeks on spring break in Hilton Head, S.C.

Softball
No. 14-ranked St. Thomas Softball lost two Saturday evening games in Tucson, Ariz., at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
The Tommies lost 7-4 to St. John Fisher, and lost 10-2 in five innings to Emory. The Purple, who took two comeback wins Friday in Tucson, bring a 3-3 record into two Sunday games to close the trip.
Track and Field
St. Thomas has more than a dozen athletes competing today in Waverly, Iowa at the Wartburg Qualifier meet. A few were able to improve on their season bests for NCAA qualifying purposes.
- Morgan Dammann dropped two seconds off her previous best in the 800 as she clocked 2:14.72 for first place, That time could get her into next week's NCAA Championships.
- Nationals-bound Eric Douville moved up in the 200 by .04 of a second with a fourth-place time of 22.06.
- The Tommie women's 4x400 relay had a season-best 3:56.88.
- Gage O'Brien took third in the weight throw in a season-best 58-0.
- Martha Hubbell lowered her mile best to 5:04, a top-30 D-III time.
