Regina Talavera signed this week to join St. Thomas' program next fall. A native of Mexico, Talavera attends high school and trains in Hilton Head, S.C.
Last November, twin sisters Abby Bremel and Maddi Bremel of Madison (Wis.) West High have signed to play for the Tommies.
Cychosz said Talavera is a top-20 ranked player in her homeland, and has trained the last three seasons at Hilton Head's Smith-Stearns Academy.
"Regina has several category one titles in Mexico and represented her county in competition in Japan in 2019," Cychosz said. "I love what Regina brings on and off the court. It will be a pleasure to have her at St Thomas. What really impresses me about Regina is her entrepreneurial spirit. She is looking to use her business degree at St Thomas to go back and help those less fortunate in her native Mexico. She plans on using what she has learned from tennis and pay forward."
She joins twin sisters Abby and Maddi Bremel, who signed in November.
"Abby and Maddi are excellent students," Cychosz said. "Both are two-sport athletes now but will be concentrating on tennis in college. Both received a great recommendation from their current coach, former Wisconsin Badgers coach Pat Klingelhoets.
"Abby has tremendous control over the ball at all levels of the court. She and Maddi will be great cultural additions to the team, and both will transition well to the Division I level. Both are very modest with a strong reputation to always work their hardest.
"Maddi advanced to the final 16 in the Wisconsin state tournament. Maddi and Abby would have been favorites to win this year's Wisconsin state doubles tournament."
Last Wednesday was the first day that student-athletes could sign with schools, and in the coming weeks and months Cychosz will continue to add to his first Division I class.
The Tommies received NCAA approval last July to make an unprecedented direct move of all of its varsity sports from non-scholarship NCAA Division III into Division I.
Starting in the 2021-22 school year, St. Thomas Tennis will be among 19 sports competing in the Summit League. The Tommies will also have teams in the Pioneer Football League for football; its women's hockey team in the Women's Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA); and its men's hockey team in the inaugural season of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).
