Overtime loss for Men's Soccer in battle of ranked teams
9/6/2019 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
No. 8-ranked Luther (2-1) scored 1:55 into sudden-death overtime to take a 3-2 win over No. 12-ranked St. Thomas in non-conference men's soccer play Friday in Decorah, Iowa. The game was a rematch of an NCAA playoff game in Chicago won by Luther last November.
It was the first road game of the season for St. Thomas, and it was scoreless over the first 67 minutes on the clock.
George Marty's goal put the Tommies ahead 1-0 midway through the second half. Luther struck back with a tying and go-ahead goal, the latter with 6:57 to play. But Sean Kurtenbach's header off a long throw in by Jack Barry -- his first collegiate goal -- tied the score 2-2 with 2:57 to go in regulation time.
Early in the first OT session, Luther used a steal near mid field to lead the winning attack that produced the deciding goal by Ben Keller off a cross.
Luther had a 8-6 edge in corner kicks and an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.
St. Thomas (1-1-1) is home this Sunday to face Wartburg (2-0) in a 2 p.m. clash at South Field.
