Offense stalls, Women's Hockey falls 1-0 in third-place game

Maggie Mitter scored 3:50 into the third period and that was all the offense Adrian College would need with Saturday's hard-fought 1-0 victory over St. Thomas in the third-place game at the NCAA Division III Women's Hockey tournament finals in Mendota Heights.

The Bulldogs (24-5-2) received 22 saves from Denisa Jandova in goal, and their defense helped kill off all three St. Thomas power plays.

The Tommies (25-3-2) came into the weekend ranked first in the U.S. College Hockey Online Division III poll and 15-0 on home ice. But a knee injury suffered in Thursday's practice knocked senior All-America goalie Kenzie Torpy out of both weekend games took a lot of wind out of the Tommies' collective sail.

Freshman Eryn Cooley stopped 29 of 32 goals in Friday's 3-0 loss to Hamline. Cooley came back Saturday and stopped 23 of 24 shots and killed all three Adrian power plays.

St. Thomas came in 6-1 this season in games decided by one goal, and the loss was in overtime. But Adrian helped limit the Tommie scoring chances.

Torpy, Heidi Hannula, Demi Cooper and Valerie Brown were the four seniors for St. Thomas who closed out their careers.
