St. Thomas Women's Soccer is headed back to the NCAA playoff for the 13th time in program history and fourth consecutive season after Saturday's 1-1 tie and shootout win at top-seed Augsburg.
Coach Sheila McGill's team (15-2-3) pushed its unbeaten streak to 13 (10-0-3). The Purple never trailed in a 1-1 tie through 110 minutes.
The Tommies made all six penalty kicks to five for the Auggie to win the tie-breaker and secure the league's automatic NCAA berth. Kate Heimer, Alex Balfour, Kaley Roberts, Lauren Wikstrom, Paige Cater and Paola Del Moral converted the shootout kicks.
Augsburg (14-3-2) is likely headed to the NCAA playoffs as well as the MIAC co-champ and No. 3 team in this week's NCAA region poll. The national tourney field will be announced Monday.
St. Thomas' Ellie Eskierka scored in the 11th minute, but Augsburg tied the score in the 79th minute with a goal by Ashley St. Aubin. The Auggues had a 6-2 edge ion corners, but shots on goal were even at eight apiece. Sarah Pasternak had seven saves for the Tommies.
