Men's Soccer rides shutdown D into playoff title match

11/6/2019 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

Tommie Men's Soccer recorded its seventh consecutive shutout of a conference opponent with Wednesday's 3-0 home win over Carleton in an MIAC semifinal-round playoff contest at South Field.

George Marty scored a goal just 39 seconds into the game and Halvor Houg converted a penalty kick in each half for St. Thomas (12-3-3), which ran its season win streak to 11.

The Toms will play in Saturday's league playoff championship game for the fourth time in five seasons.

Gustavus' home semifinal contest with St. John's was postponed until Thursday due to its snow-covered field. If the top-seeded Gusties win the game -- or tie and advance via shootout -- they will play host to St. Thomas in St. Peter. If St. John's advances, that final would be played at St. Thomas. The men's final will be at 1 p.m. unless St. Thomas plays host to men's and women's playoff title games on Saturday.

Coach Jon Lowery's Tommies came into the game receiving votes in the national poll and ranked third in the North Region. They shared the conference regular-season crown -- the program's third in four seasons.

Since allowing a goal in the eighth minute Oct. 1 at home against St. John's in an eventual 3-1 victory, St. Thomas has allowed no goals in the last 712 minutes on the clock in games against conference teams.

On offense, the Purple's last 10 goals have been scored by nine different players.

Carleton (14-5-1), an NCAA playoff team last season, had eliminated St. Olaf 2-1 in a home playoff game Tuesday.
