Women's basketball pushed, but get close win

1/10/2018 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Junior center Hannah Spaulding scored a game-high 25 points, including four to start a game-closing 8-2 run, to lead No. 16-ranked St. Thomas to a hard-fought 64-54 road win over Concordia-Moorhead in MIAC women's basketball play Wednesday night.

The Tommies (12-2 overall, 7-0 MIAC) extended two long win streaks as they made it 41 consecutive conference victories and 23 road wins in a row.

Coach Ruth Sinn's Tommies had a 42-35 rebounding edge and made 17 of their first 20 free throws to help overcome an 0-for-12 second-half performance from behind the arc. UST's defense helped hold Concordia without a field goal over the game's final 2:30.

The host Cobbers (5-7, 2-3) trailed just 37-33 at halftime. They never led after the break but got as close as 45-44 late in quarter three. They pulled within 56-52 before Spaulding made a basket in the paint and sank two free throws to push the lead to eight with 1:05 to go.
