Big second half gives women's soccer win

9/10/2017 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

ST. PAUL - The St. Thomas women's soccer team used four unanswered goals in the second half to defeat the College of St. Scholastica 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at South Field.

Four different Tommies scored, with three of the goals coming in a 12-minute span.  The big second half propelled the Purple to its third win of the year heading into conference play.

Although St. Thomas outshot the Saints 12-2 in the first half and put six shots on net, the advantage yielded no score as the two teams went to the break in a scoreless tie.

The Tommies opened things up just over 10 minutes into the second.  Two days after scoring the game-winning goal in double overtime, junior Mallory DeBoom scored her second straight game-winner to give the Tommies the spark they needed.

A long lead pass over the top of the Saint defense pulled goalkeeper Roni Rudolph out of her net.  One touch from DeBoom freed her up to put it away in an unattended goal to take a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Paige Cater followed that up by scoring her first career goal.  A scrum in front of the net ended up with a rebound bouncing out to Cater, who put it away to give the Tommies a 2-0 lead.

St. Thomas struck again just 20 seconds later.  A quick change of possesion and a cross from freshman Tessa Trettel found an open Brielle Bierman to score her first goal of the year and 16th of her Tommie career.

UST finished off the scoring in the final minute of the contest when freshman Megan Zickert scored her first career goal thanks to an assist from Erin Chiapetta.

The Tommies finished with a 28-4 shot advantage, including a 17-0 edge in shots on goal.  They also tallied nine corner kicks to zero for the Saints.

Katie Lynn recorded the win in goal for the Tommies, her second of the season.  Rudolph made 13 saves in the loss.

St. Thomas will be back in action on Tuesday when it plays host to Saint Mary's in the MIAC opener.  That one will kick off on South Field at 4:00 pm.
