Good battles, but Carleton takes two from UST Tennis

St. Thomas Women's and Men's Tennis had a good battles but dropped Sunday matches with Carleton and each finished in third place in the conference standings. The competitions were held indoors at the University of Minnesota Baseline courts
The Tommie women (14-2) lost 8-1 to the Knights, the solo MIAC champion at 10-0. They will be the third seed in the six-team MIAC Playoffs and play host St. Mary's next Wednesday afternoon in round one, with that winner playing Friday at No. 2-seed Gustavus.
Freshmen Taylor and Paige McLeod won 9-8 at first doubles for UST's only point. Carleton pulled out all four close matches in singles, two in third-set tie-breakers.
The UST men (13-3) lost several close matches and fell 6-3 to the MIAC runners-up Knights. They also claim the No. 3 seed for the conference playoffs, and will play a rematch with Carleton Thursday evening.
Luke Elifson and Martin Beck at first doubles, and Elifson and Burke Anderson won at first and third doubles.

Nationally-ranked Gustavus recorded a pair of 7-2 wins over St. Thomas in MIAC men's and women's tennis action Saturday at the St. Paul Academy Courts.
The Tommie women (14-1 overall, 8-1 MIAC) plays Carleton Sunday indoors at 9 a.m. at the U of M Baseline courts. Carleton (9-0, Gustavus (9-1) and St. Thomas (8-1) could share the MIAC title if the Tommies win Sunday. Carleton edged Gustavus, 5-4, seven days ago.
UST juniors Caitlin Bakke & Jenna Zimmerman picked up a win at second doubles, and Paige McLeod won 6-3, 6-2 at six singles. Bakke worked her way into the Super Breaker at second singles but fell just short of her second win of the day by a 10-6 margin.
The UST Men (13-2 overall, 7-1 MIAC) lost all three doubles matches by scores of 8-6 or 8-5. Luke Elifson edged nationally-ranked Mohanad Al Houni at first singles, 6-4, 6-3. Martin Beck won 6-4, 6-4 at fourth singles.
The Toms play Carleton Sunday at noon indoors at the U of M Baseline courts.
