St. Thomas Softball closed out a 7-1 week in Clermont, Fla., with two Thursday wins.

Coach John Tschida's team moved to 11-3 on the season. headed into a busy span back in Minnesota with six doubleheaders scheduled in 11 days from March 30-April 9.

 

Thursday/Softball

St. Thomas (11-3) closed out its spring-break trip with two Thursday victories. The Tommies won 11-0 over Allegheny (Pa.) in five innings, and topped UW-Whitewater 10-2. Whitewater came in 9-1 on the season.

Elise Barnes and Jenna Bromen each hit two run-run home runs, and Megan Bush had a two-run double in an eight-run third inning for UST against Whitewater. Bromen added a solo home run.

Coach John Tschida's team closed with a 7-1 record in Florida. The Toms are scheduled to open their home season March 30 with two games against 15-3 UW-La Crosse.

St. Thomas' lone Florida loss was 5-0 to ranked Linfield (Ore.). In all eight games it outscored opponents 55-13.

 

Wednesday/Softball

St. Thomas (9-3) won both Wednesday games with good pitching and defense and moved to 5-1 on its spring trip. The Toms edged Carthage (Wis.), 2-1, and shut out Hendrix (Ark.), 4-0.

Jessica Eppenberger and Sammy Hogan combined to limit Carthage to four hits and retire 13 of the last 14 batters. Brenna Walek's two-out bases-loaded single broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning. Melissa Barry singled, stole second and third and scored on Chase Shortly's sac fly for the first run.

In the win over Hendrix, Hogan and Eppenberger combined on a six-hit shutout. Walek's twp-run double led a three-run sixth inning.

 

 

Monday/Softball

St. Thomas scored an 8-0, five-inning win over UW-Stevens Point on Monday morning. The Toms (7-3) also fell 5-0 to No. 9-ranked Linfield (Ore.) to drop to 3-1 on the spring trip.

 

Softball/Sunday

The Tommies (6-2) scored a 4-3 win in eight innings over a 12-win Northwestern (Ohio) team Sunday to move to 2-0 in Clermont, Fla.

UST scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning. A runner started on second to start the inning via the international tie-break rule for tournaments. That UST runner was bunted to third before coming home on a wild pitch. Sammy Hogan had a complete-game pitching win for the Tommies.

Chase Shortly had her second consecutive 3-for-3 day.

 

Softball/Saturday

St. Thomas (5-2) needed just five innings to defeat UW-Stevens Point, 16-2, Saturday in its first softball game on its trip to Clermont, Fla.

Chase Shortly went 3-for-3 while seven other Toms had two hits. Jenna Beeso and Megan Bush each drove in three runs.

UST will face Northwestern (Ohio) Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
