Men's soccer keeps rolling with 3-0 win

DULUTH, Minn. – The eighth-ranked St. Thomas men's soccer team kept rolling with a 3-0 win over St. Scholastica on Sunday afternoon at Saints Field.  The Tommies scored early and never looked back on their way to improving to 11-0-3 on the year.  With the loss, the Saints drop to 8-6-0 overall.

St. Thomas wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring at the five-minute mark to take the early 1-0 lead.  Senior Mark Heydt sent a long pass to the front of the net, where junior Christian Elliehausen found the end of it and put it home to score his second goal of the year.

Nearly half an hour later, fellow junior Shae Bottum extended the Tommie lead with his third goal of the year.  Bottum bent a free kick around the St. Scholastica wall and tucked it inside the post to give the Purple a 2-0 lead heading to halftime.

Pierce Erickson put the finishing touches on the win with an added insurance goal just over 10 minutes into the second half.  The Tommie ball movement proved superior, and Erickson took advantage of a shifting defense to put away his second goal of the year.  Heydt and Bottum recorded assists on the score.

St. Thomas outshot the Saints 19-7 on the afternoon, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal.  The Tommies also created six corner kick opportunities to just two for the Saints.

In net, sophomore keeper Aidan Hogan was tested just once on the way to his sixth win of the season.  Hogan has allowed just one goal in eight games played this season and has now recorded six shutouts.  His counterpart, Corrado Rosato surrendered all three goals and made six saves in the loss.

Sunday's shutout was St. Thomas' eighth in a row, as the Tommies have not allowed a goal since Sept. 14th, a stretch they will put to the test on Wednesday night when they travel to Decorah, Iowa to square off with 16th-ranked Luther College on Wednesday night.
