AURORA, Ill. - The St. Thomas men's soccer team put the finishing touches on an unbeaten trip to Illinois on Tuesday afternoon when it defeated Aurora University 2-0 at Vago Field. The Tommies complete the trip with a perfect 3-0 record and improve to 4-0-0 on the year.
Junior Jamie Collins got things started for the Tommies with his first goal in a purple jersey. Collins scored just 2:56 into the contest after taking a cross from Miles Stockman-Willis to put UST out in front 1-0 in the early going.
Stockman-Willis turned from passer to scorer for the second Tommie goal. Just less than nine minutes into the second half, the senior put home his third goal of the season with an assist from Pierce Erickson to give the Purple a 2-0 lead. With the assist, Erickson extended his point streak to four games to start the season.
The Stockman-Willis goal proved to be the final score of the game, as UST clamped down defensively to secure the win. The Tommies did not allow a single shot in the final 35-plus minutes to capture their third shutout in four games this season.
St. Thomas finished with a 17-6 shot advantage, including a 9-1 edge in the second half. UST also recorded five corner kicks to just one for the Spartans.
Grant Larson only needed to make two saves to tally his third shutout of the year. His counterpart, Zach McFarland suffered the loss in a four-save effort.
The Tommie men now have a well-deserved rest until next Wednesday, Sept. 16 when they host Saint John's at South Field. That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m., kick off.
