Women's CC races to close win over Winona State

Senior Emily Gapinski, junior Bridget McGivern and senior Megan Terukina finished 3-4-5 in a field of 75 runners to lead the Tommie women's cross country team to a close team victory at the St. Mary's Alumni Open in Winona.
The No. 29-ranked Tommies had 27 points to edge Division II's No. 17-ranked Winona State (29), No. 26-ranked Luther (80) and St. Mary's (120).
The 5K race took place in humid conditions on SMU's hilly home course.
Jordan Paschke (19:54) and Raissa Hansen (20:02) led Winona State with a 1-2 finish.
UST had six runners finish in the top 10: Gapinski (20:07), McGivern (20:22) and Terukina (20:33) were 3-4-5; freshman Bridget Schmitt was seventh (20:48); soph Megan Gossfeld placed eighth (20:50); and junior Kayla Janto placed 10th (20:52).
The Toms held out a couple of athletes, including junior Alex Fossum and senior Kate Mares.
St. Thomas will compete Sept. 18 on the Notre Dame campus in the National Catholic Championships.
