St. Thomas women's tennis won all three doubles matches and pulled out an historic 5-2 victory over Gustavus in Sunday's MIAC playoff finals match in St. Peter.
It's the Tommies' first victory over Gustavus in nearly two dozen matches dating back 20-plus seasons. It avenged a 6-3 loss to the Gusties eight days ago in St. Paul.
This is only the second conference championship for women's tennis, and first since UST won the 1991 regular-season crown.
St. Thomas (18-2) advances to the NCAA playoffs for the seventh time in program history but first since 2003. UST will learn its first-round assignment on Monday.
Jenna Zimmerman won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Kara Lefsrud won a three-set decision at No. 4 to give St. Thomas the clinching points. Those players went 2-0 on the day.
