ST. PAUL – The St. Thomas softball team picked up a pair wins on Friday afternoon when it defeated Macalester College 8-0 in six innings in game one before grabbing an 8-3 win in game two. The Tommies never trailed in the 13 innings played on Friday, racking up 19 hits as they improve to 25-5 overall and 9-3 in the MIAC.
Game 1 – St. Thomas 8, Macalester 0
After three innings of scoreless softball, St. Thomas was the first to get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Annie Boyer doubled with one out in the inning and was brought around to score two batters later when Megan Bush singled to left to give her team a 1-0 lead.
UST held the Scots scoreless in the bottom half of the inning and went on to crack the game open in the top of the fifth. The Tommies scored four runs to open up a 5-0 lead and would never look back. Megan Dupuis and Katie Jo Delisle each slapped RBI singles to drive in the first two runs before Megan Bush capped off the inning with a two-run single to center field.
St. Thomas went on to score three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to capture the 8-0 win in six innings. A two-run double from Bianca Peterson and a run scored on a ground out followed to bring the final score to 8-0.
The Tommie defense was up to par in Friday's first game, holding Macalester to just three hits. Kendra Bowe went all six innings, striking out 11 and walking just one in the win. She is now 13-2 on the year, while her counterpart, Miranda Stokes was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs in five innings.
Six Tommie batters recorded a hit in the game, led by McKenzie Wergin and Megan Bush who each tallied a pair of hits. Wergin was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Bush was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.
Game 2 – St. Thomas 8, Macalester 3
Game two brought about an evenly played first two innings before St. Thomas outscored Macalester 6-1 over the final five innings to capture an 8-3 win to complete the sweep.
The Tommies scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead only to be matched in the bottom of the first with a run by the Scots. The same held true in the second inning to send the two teams to the third in a 2-2 tie.
UST kept the scoring up with a pair of runs in the top of the third and one more in the top of the fourth thanks to a solo home run from Danielle Tschann.
The Scots did not answer either of the run-scoring innings, as UST went in to the sixth inning with a 5-2 lead. Three runs in the top of the sixth all but put the game away for the Tommies. Breezy Bannon knocked in an RBI single and Megan Dupuis doubled to left to score two runs and take an 8-2 lead.
The Scots scored once more in the bottom of the sixth, but it was all they would get, as St. Thomas claimed the 8-3 win.
The Tommies tallied 11 hits to Macalester's six in the game. Dupuis, Delisle, Bowe, and Tschann all recorded multiple hits, led by Dupuis with a 3-for-4 mark. She also had a pair of runs batted in.
Four Tommies logged time in the circle, but it was Bowe who received the win after going an inning and a third, allowing one hit and no runs. Brittany Ehmann picked up the loss for the Scots, giving up eight runs on 11 hits.
St. Thomas will be back in action on Tuesday when the Tommies host Gustavus in an MIAC doubleheader beginning at 3:30 pm.
