The St. Thomas women's soccer team fell to Macalester by the score of 2-1 in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener on Tuesday night in St. Paul.
The Tommies sprinted out to an early 1-0 lead, but could not hold on, as the Scots came back to score a goal in each half to take the win. With the 2-1 decision, UST falls to 1-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the MIAC, while Macalester improves to 3-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league play.
St. Thomas struck first in the 15th minute when freshman Brielle Bierman scored her second goal of the season thanks to an assist from Hayley Engel. Bierman took a touch to settle the ball and fired from 10 yards out to give her team the early momentum and the 1-0 lead.
Macalester's Bonnie Gale had the equalizer in the 23rd minute. Gale's third goal of the year came with an assist from Hannah Walker to tie the game at 1-1. Walker sent a cross to the back post where Gale was able to put it home.
The game-winning goal came in the 61st minute for the Scots when Lily Jilk scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick. The goal brought the score to 2-1, which is where it would stay for the remainder of the night.
For the game, St. Thomas held a shot advantage of 17-8 and also posted a 6-1 mark in corner kicks.
"I thought we played really well," said Head Coach Sheila McGill. "We controlled the game for the most part, but didn't put our chances away. Sometimes, bounces just don't go your way. Unfortunately, that's soccer."
Sophomore goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig was tagged with the loss in a four-save effort, while Scot keeper Emma Toomer was credited the win after making three saves.
The Tommie women will be back in action on Saturday when they make the short trip to St. Catherine for a 1:00 p.m., showdown.
