St. Thomas softball made it 7-0 in elimination games in its NCAA postseason run as it rallied for a 4-3 win over Montclair (N.J.) State Saturday in losers' bracket play at the Division III national tournament in Tyler, Texas.
The Tommies (44-8) are assured of a top-four finish. They play noon Sunday against Salisbury, which is 2-0 on the tournament. Salisbuty topped the Tommies 1-0 on Thursday.
Mary Rentz' two-run double capped a four-run rally in the sixth inning and erased a 1-0 Montclair lead. The Redhawks threatened in the last of the seventh and scored two on two singles, a hit batter and an error. Katie Jo Delisle struck out two batters to end the game with the tying and winning runs on base.
UST's Kendra Bowe pitched into the seventh inning and allowed just one earned run for the mound win. She shut out MSU from the second though sixth innings. Delisle earned the save as she got the last three outs.
With UST trailing 1-0 and down to its final five outs, Bianca Peterson singled and scored the tying run on Emily Gregory's double. Erin Mussett's double put UST ahead, 2-1. After Brenna Walek was intentionally walked, Rentz lined a ball over the head of the left fielder to plate two for a 4-1 lead.
Gregory was 2-for-2 with a double. Over her last 17 games, Gregory has 27 hits and 30 RBI while batting .510.
The Tommies improved to 15-5 in five national tournament trips, led by NCAA crowns in 2004 and 2005.
