Women's soccer run ends in MIAC Semifinals

11/5/2014 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

MINNEAPOLIS – After a thrilling shootout win over Saint Benedict in Tuesday's MIAC Quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded St. Thomas women's soccer team's run in the postseason ended with a 1-0 loss to Augsburg College in the semifinals on Wednesday night.  The Tommies finish the year 8-8-4, while the Auggies improve to 15-4-0 and advance the MIAC Championship game on Saturday, Nov. 8th.

Augsburg scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half.  After threatening multiple times through the early part of the game, the Auggies snuck one past Tommie keeper Tarynn Theilig to take the 1-0 lead.  The goal came off a corner kick in the 27th minute.

Rather than send the corner kick into the box, Molly Allen played it back towards the midfield to Abi Rodstein, who served up a well-placed ball on the back post.  Her teammate Marie Fitzgerald found her way behind the defense and deflected the ball into the back of the net to score her 13th goal of the year.

Following the goal, the Tommies were unable to find the equalizer through the remainder of the half.  Although they peppered Augsburg goalkeeper Marissa Guillou with five shots on goal in the frame, the Tommie women went into the break trailing 1-0 with 45 minutes to play.

However, the wet conditions and Augsburg defense slowed the game down in the second half, allowing UST to place just one shot on target.  After an offensive-minded first half that saw the shot count favor Augsburg 12-6, and an even 5-5 mark on goal, the two teams combined for just eight shots in the second half.  Each squad registered four shots with the Auggies holding the slight advantage in shots on net (2-1).

Though the Tommies pushed on, they could not find the goal needed to push the game to overtime, and suffered the 1-0 defeat.

The final shot tally read 16-10 in favor of Augsburg.  The Auggies also held the edge in shots on goal (7-6) and corner kicks (4-1).

Tommie keeper Tarynn Theilig had another solid performance, making six saves, but allowed the lone goal and finishes the year 8-8-4.  Auggie keeper Marissa Guillou also made six saves in the win.

St. Thomas finishes the year 8-8-4 overall and 6-4-1 in the MIAC.  The Tommies also achieved a milestone this week, advancing in the MIAC Playoffs for the first time in the 12-year history of the current postseason format.
