Volleyball falls in five-set thriller

No. 7-ranked Tommie Volleyball couldn't close out No. 25-ranked Augsburg and dropped a 3-2 decision Wednesday night at Schoenecker Arena. The Auggies rallied from a 2-1 set deficit and won 19-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-20, 16-14.
Augsburg led 12-8 in the fifth set but the Tommies clawed back to tie the score 14-14. But the Auggies took the last two points for the victory and pushed their season win streak to eight. Augsburg improved to 4-0 this season in five-set matches.
UST (19-6 overall, 7-1 MIAC) and Augsburg (19-4, 7-1) share the conference lead with three regular-season matches to play.
St. Thomas had won 15 of its last 16 matches this season and 15 consecutive contests against conference opponents befofe Wednesday. UST hit .260 in their two set victories but .070 in the other sets
Kelly Foley had 18 kills and hit .457; Jill Greenfield had 12 kills, 27 digs and four blocks; Taylor Lewis had nine kills and 23 digs; Whitney Abrahamson had 27 digs; Maddie Reese had 27 assists and 11 digs; Kayla Walton had 23 assists; and Sara Atkinson and Whitney Lloyd each had eight kills.
For Augsburg, Ashley Peper had 17 kills and 19 digs and Mackensie Menke had 34 digs.
UST plays Saturday at Hamline at 5 p.m.
