Softball 2-0, advances in MIAC Playoffs

Bianca Peterson and Erin Mussett slugged home runs to lead top-seeded St. Thomas to a 6-2 comeback win over No. 8-seed St. Catherine in Friday night pool play at the MIAC Softball Playoffs in Mankato.

Earlier, UST recorded an 11-0, five-inning win over Macalester.

The Tommies (36-5) ran their season victory streak to 23 and improved to 29-1 all-time in the 10-year history of the conference playoffs. They advance to the Saturday-Sunday double-elimination format and join Gustavus, St. Olaf and the Bethel/St. Ben's winner.

Mussett's two-run homer capped a five-run fifth inning that erased a 2-1 Wildcat lead.

Peterson, who went 2-for-2 with a walk, hit a solo homer in the third inning to pull UST within one run. Her RBI single in the fifth tied the game at 2-2. Jenna Hoffman's RBI hit made it 3-2. Emily Gregory hit a sac fly, and Mussett capped the surge with a two-run homer.

Kendra Bowe had a complete-game six-hitter to end the season of the Wildcats (16-17).

In the Macalester game, freshman Morgan Murphy allowed two hits and no runs over five innings. Jenna Hoffman, Emily Gregory and Brenna Walek homered -- the 28th career round tripper in three seasons for Gregory.

Hoffman, Gregory, Kimmy Hassel, McKenzie Wergin and Alyssa Dunrud each had two hits for the Tommies.

UST plays at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
