Allen shines, W. Tennis edges Blazers

Mary Allen pulled out a three-set win at first singles to lift the fifth-seeded Tommie women to a 5-4 win over No. 4-seed St. Ben's in the first round of the MIAC playoffs in St. Peter.
Allen won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to break a 4-4 team tie and close out the match victory. Earlier, Allen joined Claire Elkin to win 8-5 at first doubles.
Rachel Wright and Kara Lefsrud won at Nos. 2-3 singles, and Anna Wright and Brittany Alexander won at third doubles. Anna Wright lost a three-set decision at sixth singles.
UST (11-7) avenged a 6-3 February loss to the Blazers.
The Tommies will face top-seed Carleton Saturday at 9 a.m. in the semifinal round.
