Senior lefty Bryce Gapinski allowed one run and four hits in a complete game win as St. Thomas (3-1) wrapped up an 8-1 game-two win over UW-LaCrosse on Monday night at the Metrodome. It was Gapinski's eleventh career complete game and his seven innings of work moves him closer towards the record book for all-time innings pitched at UST.
In the opener, UW-Lacrosse scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Brooks Braga opened the inning with a single and scored on Jay Fanta's RBI double. Lacrosse catcher Zach Harazin then moved Fanta to third with a fly out to right field, shortstop Corey Geary doubled to score Fanta then Garrett Novinski singled to rightfield and Brett Jacobson hit an RBI double to score Geary. Trevor Burmesiter followed with a walk to load the bases and Cole Cefalu drew a full-count walk to score Novinski, making it 4-0.
The four-run fourth inning was all the Eagles needed to outlast the Tommies as senior right hander Garrett Scray worked 6.1 innings while allowing only five hits and striking out five. The De Pere, Wisconsin native kept the Tommies off balance all night while he faced the minimum through six innings.
Fanta finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI in game 1, while Braga was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Seven of UW-Lacrosse's nine starters had a hit in the contest. UST scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh on a Nick Reichert sacrifice fly. Dylan Thomas (0-1) suffered the loss for St. Thomas going all 7 innings while allowing 10 hits, six runs and three walks and striking out 11. Despite the loss Thomas' eleven strikeouts were the most by a Tommie starter since Matt Schuld struckout 14 St. Scholastica hitters on (3/1/09). Ben Podobinski was 2-for-3 for the Tommies in game 1.
In game two, UST scored six runs in the second inning on four hits, a walk, a hit batsman and a fielder's choice. Dan Reichert had a two-run double, J.D. Dorgan had a two-run single and Ryan Gerber had an RBI double in the second-inning outburst. Tim Kuzniar added an RBI single in the third inning to run the score to 8-0. Ben Podobinski, Gerber, and Kuzniar each had three hits on the night to lead the Tommies.
Gapinski, who had a two-hit shutout going through six innings, got 12 ground-ball outs and struck out five. He improved his career record to 20-5.
St. Thomas returns to the Dome Thursday to face nationally-ranked UW-Whitewater in a 5:00 PM double-header at the Metrodome.
