Sat. Softball: Toms win 9-2, 5-1; on to Sunday

Marta Radcliffe threw four shutout innings and Cassie Smith had a two-run homer as No. 24-ranked St. Thomas scored a 9-2 win over St. Olaf in Saturday's MIAC first-round playoff game in Mankato.
The Tommies (36-6) topped Bethel 5-1 in game two to advance to Sunday's championship round. Radcliffe allowed three hits, one walk and one run in the complete-game win. UST broke to a 4-0 lead after three innings and had eight hits on the game.
In the oles win, Alison Smith went 2-for-4 to lead a nine-hit attack for the Tommies (35-6). Radcliffe allowed one his and one walk and fanned eight. Christy Gries worked the last three innings and allowed two runs.
Bethel started the day with a 4-2 win over second-seed Gustavus. In the first elimination game, Gustavus beat St. Olaf 5-2. The Gusties-Bethel winner of the 4 p.m. game must top UST twice on Sunday to take the playoff title.
