In a battle of top-10 ranked teams, the fifth-ranked Tommies used strong pitching and timely hitting to post a 5-1 win over No. 7-ranked St. Scholastica in Sunday's non-conference baseball game at UST's Koch Diamond.
Tommie senior RHP Kris Edwards celebrated his 24th birthday as he allowed one run, one walk and six hits over 7 2-3 innings. Edwards struck out seven and improved to 7-2 on the season.
Senior RHP Brandon Stone got the final four outs for his sixth save of the season. UST had no errors and converted 14 ground outs. The Toms lowered their ERA to 2.34, tops in Division III. They have limited five of their last six opponents to one or less runs.
John Bauer and Matt Olson had triples in a three-run fifth inning for the Toms (25-6). Olson and Drew Cremisino each had two hits to lead an eight-hit attack. Bauer drove in a run with a sac fly, Cremisino had an RBI single.
Paul Kolodge went 3-for-4 and Sean Claugherty had two hits for CSS (32-5). Three of the Saints' five losses have come to the Tommies.
