Anna Strehlow and Hannah Gikling scored goals in the 15th and 25th minutes and St. Thomas went on to post a 4-0 victory over St. Mary's in Saturday's MIAC women's soccer game at UST's South Field.
The Tommies secured their third consecutive MIAC playoff berth with the victory and made a happy Senior Day celebration for five seniors.
Freshmen Katy Scherer and Jenna Savino scored in a 30-second span midway through the second half to close out the win.
Coach Sheila McGill's Tommies (11-6-1 overall, 7-3-1 MIAC) will travel to Moorhead for a 2 p.m. semifinal-round playoff game Wednesday vs. the second-seed Cobbers. Concordia lost to St. Ben's Saturday, while the Tommies and Blazers slipped past St. Olaf for the final playoff spot. The Oles lost 2-0 to first-place Carleton and fell to fifth place.
UST lost in overtime to Concordia in the 2008 playoffs but have won their last two games played at Concordia, including a 2-1 victory on Oct. 6. The latter win was part of a 7-2-1 run for St. Thomas over its last 10 games. St. Thomas is 22-4-4 in road games over the last three seasons.
Gikling's goal was the fourth of her career in 67 games and third against St. Mary's.
Junior Allie Byron and senior Amanda Domeier each played 45 minutes in net as UST shutout the Cardinals for the third consecutive season.
