Volleyball starts 2-0 at SMU tournament

The No. 10-ranked Tommies (4-0) posted two more 3-0 wins on Saturday and finished 4-0 in the Sugar Loaf Invitational in Winona.
Coach Thanh Pham's squad topped Loras (25-10, 25-15, 26-24) and UW-LaCrosse (25-18, 25-10, 25-11) to close the weekend. The Tommies combiuned to hit .293 in those Saturday matches.
St. Thomas topped Viterbo and UW-River Falls in Friday matches.
The Toms and host school St. Mary's were the lone teams to go 4-0 in the nine-team tournament, as UST was the only squad to go 12-0 in sets.
Senior hitter Kylee Crotty and junior setter Emily Foster were among nine seclected for the All-Toournament team. Crotty averaged 12 kills and 12 digs per match. Foster had 40 assists and 10 digs in the Loras victory.
The Toms avenged two five-set defeats from 2008 to LaCrosse and have now won 32 of their last 34 matches dating back to August 2008.
St. Thomas plays next Friday and Saturday in the Augsburg Invite.

Friday story
The St. Thomas volleyball team opened its 2009 season with a pair of three-set wins in Friday play at the nine-team Sugar Loaf Invite in Winona.
The 10th-ranked Tommies topped Viterbo (Wis.), 25-18, 25-9, 25-22, and later swept UW-River Falls 25-19, 25-12, 25-16.
In the Viterbo win, Kyley Crotty had 20 kills,14 digs and four blocks, and freshman Kaitlin Wachter had 21 digs for the Tommies. Crotty added eight kills and 14 digs in the River Falls match.
UST and St. Mary's went 2-0 in Friday play, with 1-1 finishes by Loras, Luther, UW-LaCrosse, Viterbo and St. Catherine.
On Saturday, the Tommies play Loras (noon) and UW-LaCrosse (2 p.m.) to close the tourney.
