Volleyball takes No. 1, No. 7 teams to 5 sets in losses

No. 6-ranked St. Thomas lost two thrilling five-set volleyball decisions on Saturday to top-seven ranked teams at the Washington (Mo.) Invite in St. Louis.
No. 1-ranked Juniata (Pa.) outlasted the Tommies in five with a 15-11 win in the fifth set. The Toms lost the first two sets, won the next two but lost 15-11 in the deciding fifth set.
No. 7-rated Washington (Mo.) rallied from a 2-1 sets deficit to edge the Tommies 19-17 in the decisive fifth set.
Over the last three seasons, St. Thomas is 57-2 in matches decided in three and four sets and 9-8 in matches extended to five.
The Tommies (10-2) had two players named to the All-Tournament team -- senior hitter Kyley Crotty and junior setter Emily Foster.
In Frriday's win over No. 19-ranked Laverne, Tori Jones hit .393 and had 16 kills; Kaitlin Wachter had 41 digs; Crotty had 11 kills and 29 digs; Foster had 38 assists and 10 digs; and Molly Staton had 10 digs.
In the Juniata match, Katie Bonine had 11 kills and 20 digs; Crotty had 14 kills and 28 digs; Foster had 48 assists and 20 digs; Wachter had 36 digs; and Jones had eight kills.
Against Wash. U., Jones had five blocks, 21 kills and hit .326; Bonine had seven kills and 10 digs; Crotty had 12 kills and 25 digs; Wachter had 24 digs; Foster had 58 assists and 11 digs; Jill Osborne had 11 kills; and Carlie Waibel had 11 digs.
The Tommies srart their home schedule this Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. match against St. Mary's in the Concordia-St. Paul Gangelhoff Center.
