Baseball shades St. Olaf, 4-3, in key playoff test

Matt Schuld pitched into the eighth inning to lead No. 8-ranked St. Thomas to a 4-3 win over St. Olaf in Saturday's winners' bracket game at the MIAC baseball tournament in Dundas.
Matt Olson homered and Roy Larson and Brady Field added RBI hits for the Tommies (31-9), who have won eight of their last nine games.
UST took a 4-1 lead before the Oles pulled within 4-3 in the eighth inning. Brandon Stone got the final six outs, including a infield out and strikeout to end the game with the tying run at second base.
UST advances to Sunday's round in Dundas and needs just one win to claim the playoff crown and NCAA automatic qualifying berth. St. Olaf eliminated Hamline, 9-4, faces the Tommies at 1 p.m. If the Tom lose, the teams will play a 4 p.m. rematch for the title.
Schuld outdueled St. Olaf All-American Todd Mathison, who allowed three earned runs, two walks and nine hits in eight innings.
