Baseball wins a pair of two-run games over Auggies

Sophomore Ryan Fahey and junior Matt Schuld combined on a four-hit shutout and junior Tom Wippler drove in both runs with a single and a ground out to lead No. 13-ranked St. Thomas (21-6 overall, 10-2 MIAC) to a 2-0 game two win to cap Saturday's hard-fought conference baseball sweep of Augsburg at UST's Koch Diamond.
The Tommies extended their MIAC lead as second-place St. Olaf lost 10-7 in game one Saturday at Macalester. Mac is now 7-4 in the conference and the Oles are 4-3 going into game two, which started about 5:15 p.m.
Tommie junior Roy Larson reached in all seven plate appearances on the day with three hits, three walks and one hit batsman. For Augsburg, Craig Henry, Joe Pierce and Don Blunt each had three hits on the day.
In the opener, UST freshman John Means hit his first collegiate HR in the fifth inning to erase a one-run deficit and freshman John Light pitched four solid innings of middle relief to lead the Tommies to a 7-5 win.
Schuld retired four of the five batters he faced in the nightcap for a save. In game one, junior Brandon Stone got three ground ball outs in the seventh for a save.
Augsburg outhit the Toms 14-12 on the day, including three triples in the first game. But Auggie pitchers hit four batters and walked eight.
UST retired the last eight Auggie batters of game one. Augsburg outhit UST 10-7, including three triples, but six walks and three hit batters helped UST overcome deficits of 2-0 and 5-4. Joe Pierce was 3-for-4 for the Auggies.
Fahey allowed four hits and two walks while striing out four in 5 1-3 innings. Schuld came on with one out and runners at first and second and UST leading just 1-0 in the top of the sixth. He got a strikeout and the Auggies lead runner was tagged out at third trying to steal.
Brian Schmitz' leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh helped UST secure an extra run. Roy Larson single him to third and Wippler's grounder was a 6-4-3 double play but scored Schmitz from third.
In the seventh, Schuld allowed a leadoff single but got a ground out, strikeout and fly out to end the game.
Dere Jacobson had a one-out triple in the third and scored on Wippler's bases-loaded single.
Kris Ozra allowed five hits and two runs in six innings for the Auggies.
