No. 24-ranked St. Thomas split a baseball doubleheader with region power UW-Oshkosh and closed its Florida trip with a 9-2 record. The Tommies won 12-3 in game one, but lost 3-2 in game two as they stranded 11 runners.

UST (11-4) had 24 hits on the day, led by Matt McQuillan (4-for-5), Tom Wippler (4-for-8) and Roy Larson (4-for-9). Louie Salmen had a three-run homer in game one, and Taylor Rahm also homered in a 3-for-3 outing.

Two freshmen pitched well for the Tommies. John Licht scattered 10 hits in six innings and allowed just two earned runs. Bryce Gapinski allowed two earned runs in 4 1-3 innings. Matt Schuld pitched the last inning of game one and the final 2.2 innings of game two.

The Tommies had swept the Titans on Monday 6-3 and 15-8. On Wednesday, UST swept Western Connecticut, 18-5 and 8-5 with 31 hits. Wippler went 5-for-8 with four RBI; Brian Schmitz went 5-for-9; Dan Leslie went 4-for-9; and McQuillan went 4-for-7. In game one, Ryan Fahey allowed 11 hits, one walk and five runs in the complete-game victory. In game two, Brady Gibbs pitched the last five innings and allowed one run and four hits.

The Tommies had 95 runs in the 11 Florida games and allowed 50 runs. UST's four season defeats are by a combined six runs.

The Toms lost 10-8 on Tuesday to DePauw after beating the Indiana team 7-3 two days earlier.

St. Thomas comes home Friday and opens its conference season in the Metrodome Saturday with a doubleheader at 7 p.m. vs. Bethel.
