Football falls; Hoops gets sweep; Women tie in hockey

Football
--St. Thomas never led and lost 30-21 at Linfield today in the NCAA quarterfinals in McMinnville, Ore, to close the season 11-2.
The Toms had a punt blocked which preceded a short scoring drive, and had five turnovers after going 13 consecutive quarters without a turnover. Linfield outgained UST 355-312 in total yards. The Wildcats (12-0) lead Division III in turnover ratio, now at plus-29 in 12 games.
UST fell behind 14-0 in the first 13:00 but got back into Ben Wartman rushed for 143 yards and Fritz Waldvogel caught seven passes for 137 yards and added 90 return yards. Linfield used a 41-yard-field goal which barely made it over the bar en route to a 24-14 halftime lead. UST pulled within 24-20 late in the third quarter but was unable to get closer.

Men's Basketball
Tyler Nicolai had 16 points and Alex Healy had 11 as St. Thomas scored a 70-61 win over St. Olaf in Saturday's MIAC home game played at Macalester. The Tommies (5-0 overall, 2-0 MIAC) had a 31-4 edge. Anders Halvorsen had eight points, six blocks and six rebounds. The Oles (2-3, 0-1) converted 22-of-25 qat the foul line and Mark Torrell had 18 of his 20 points in the second half.
The Toms plays Monday night at unbeaten Augsburg.

Women's Basketball
St. Thomas used as 7-1 game closing run to hold off St. Olaf in Saturday's home women's basketball game played at Macalester College. UST won 56-49 and moved to 4-1 overall, 1-1 MIAC. The Toms had a 24-8 edge in bench points led by Ali Johnson's 11-points and Andi Olson's 10 points and nine rebounds. Sarah Smith had eight rebounds and Jazmin Townsend and Becky Theisen each had nine points.

The Tommies tied No. 5-ranked Gustavus 2-2 today on home ice in Mendota Heights to get three of the four points on the weekend. (MORE)
