Volleyball goes 2-2 vs. Iowa at Border Battle

The No. 6-ranked St. Thomas volleyball team (15-4) split two matches Saturday at the Iowa-Minnesota Border Battle in Dubuque, Iowa, and finished 2-2 on the two-day tourney.

The Toms lost to Central in four games and beat Loras in four games.

Central won, 27-25, 25-13, 22-25, 26-24. UST topped Loras, 16-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-12.

Junior All-America setter Emily Foster made the All-Tournament team.

In the Central loss, Foster had 10 digs, four blocks and 40 assists; Jill Osborne had 11 kills and four blocks; Tori Jones had nine kills; Kaitlin Wachter had 14 digs; Kyley Crotty had 14 digs; and Katie Bonine had eight kills and nine digs.

In the Loras win, Foster had 17 digs and 41 assists; Tori Jones had seven kills; Wachter had 27 digs; Crotty had 18 digs; Osborne had 11 kills; Molly Staton had 13 digs; Alesha Nelson had 10 kills and three blocks; and Carlie Waibel had 17 digs.

The Toms are home Wednesday to play Macalester (7:30 p.m.) at Concordia University.

The No. 6-ranked St. Thomas volleyball team couldn't close out unranked Simpson and lost a five-set match Friday night at the Iowa-Minnesota Border Battle in Dubuque, Iowa.

The Storm lost the first two sets but won the last three 29-27, 25-21 and 15-10.

Simpson, which started the day 8-8, upset No. 17-ranked Concordia-Moorhead earlier in the day.

The Tommies (14-3) are now 2-3 this season in five-set matches. They beat Wartburg 3-0 on Friday afternoon.

In the Wartburg win, Foster had 11 digs and 31 assists; Jill Osborne had 12 kills and hit .480; Tori Jones had 10 kills; Kaitlin Wachter had 21 digs; and Kyley Crotty had 15 digs. UST hit.293.

In the Simpson loss, Foster had 20 digs, five blocks and 35 assists; Jones had 10 kills; Wachter had 32 digs; Kyley Crotty had 13 kills and 17 digs; and Katie Bonine had nine kills and 11 digs.

On Saturday, they face Central (9 a.m.) and Loras (noon) to close the tourney.

Iowa and Minnesota teams split the eight matches on the day, 4-4.
