Men's Soccer takes bitter 1-0, two-overtime loss

Wes Elfman scored on a breakaway goal with 13 seconds left in the second overtime to lift first-place Carleton (10-3 overall, 7-1 MIAC) to a 1-0 win over host St. Thomas (7-5-1, 3-2) in MIAC men's soccer play Wednesday at UST's South Field.
With overtime nearing its end and the clock down near 30 seconds, UST pushed upfield but couldn't get a shot.
The ball came out near midfield, and CC's Tim Wills sent the pass ahead. Tommie keeper Carlso Castelan came far out from the nets to block the shot, but Elfman kept control, weaved right and was able to punch home an open 30-foot shot for the right to end the second sudden-death session.
The Toms are 0-3-2 in the last five meetings with Carleton, the 2007 and 2008 MIAC champion. UST is now 2-2-1 in five overtime games this season.
UST had more offensive opportunities but couldn't get many shots on goal. The Knights had an excellent scoring chance to start overtime, but a shot by Wills just missed to the right.
St. Thomas is home Saturday to play Gustavus (1 p.m.).
