Junior Derek Engler scored two goals in a 12:31 span of the first half to lead the host Tommies (7-0 overall, 3-0 MIAC) past Augsburg (4-1-1, 2-1) in MIAC men's soccer play Wednesday at UST's South Field.
Carlos Castelan played all 90 minutes in goal and allowed one goal for unbeaten St. Thomas, which is off to its best season start since 1977.
The goals were the first of the season for Engler, who recorded three goals in 2007.
Engler scored on a high shot in the 14th minute, assisted by Mike Hutton, for a 1-0 Tommie lead. Engler scored again from the middle of the field in the 22nd minute, assisted by Andy Gikling, to make it 2-0. Augsburg's Alex Hildebrandt's header in the 39th minute, assisted by Lucas Ingram, cut the lead to 2-1.
The Tommies had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 15-9 edge in overall shots. The Auggies had an 8-5 advantage in corner shots.
The Tommies will travel to Storm Lake, Iowa, for Saturday's non-conference game against Buena Vista.
St. Thomas is now 21-1-2 on the fall in soccer, volleyball and football.
