Freshman Mike Hutton scored a breakaway goal in the second minute and the host Tommie men's soccer team stay unbeaten with Saturday's 2-0 victory over Bethel in MIAC play at UST's South Field.
Junior Andy Gikling added a goal in the 79th minute for St. Thomas (5-0 overall, 2-0 MIAC). Carlos Castelan was in goal for his third shutout of the season. Hutton now has scored five goals in five games to start his college career.
Bethel (1-6, 0-2) rebounded from the early deficit and neutralized UST for much of the game, which was played in on and off rain. But Gikling's goal midway through the second half gave UST a safer cushion.
St. Thomas, which has not trailed all season, iis home Sunday to face St. Scholastica (noon), and returns to MIAC play Wednesday at home top face conference co-leader Augsburg (4 p.m.).
