Friday MIAC Baseball: Toms win twice, now 31-7

No. 13-ranked St. Thomas rode two strong pitching outings to a pair of Friday baseball victories in the MIAC Tournament in Dundas.
The Tommies (31-7) ran their winning streak to 10 with an 11-3 win over Gustavus and a 6-2 victory over St. Olaf. The latter win ended the Oles' 13-game winning streak. UST reached 30 wins for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
On the day, Chris Bullis went 4-for-7 and Tom Wippler went 4-for-8 as UST had 14 hits vs. Gustavus and nine vs. St. Olaf.
Gustavus stayed alive and knocked out Hamline, 7-3. The Gusties will play St. Olaf Saturday at 11 a.m. in an elimination game, and the winner will face St. Thomas at 2 p.m. If UST loses Saturday, they'll play a rematch for the championship on Sunday.
UST improved to 8-0 all-time in Friday first-round games with the win over Gustavus. Matt Schuld pitched a complete game against the Gusties and allowed two earned runs, two walks and nine hits with six strikeouts. The Toms led just 3-1 in the seventh inning but broke open the game in the seventh. Wippler had a solo homer, three hits and three RBI.
Lonnie Robinson had a complete-game win vs. St. Olaf and improved to 20-3 on his career. The Toms led just 3-1 in the sixth inning but broke open the game in the seventh. Robinson struck out 10, allowed two runs and six hits.
Mark Boland hit a homer in each game and Eric Fleming also had a solo homer in game two.
Matt Pexa, Brian Schmitz and Louie Salmen each had three hits on the day.
