The No. 9-ranked St. Thomas baseball team saw its bats go cold and had its season end Friday with two losses in the NCAA regional tournament in Oshkosh, Wis.
The Tommies (34-9) lost 4-1 in 10 innings to UW-Whitewater (38-8), then were sidelined 7-1 by St. Scholastica (35-5). UST had a 13-game winning streak halted in the late-morning game and had trouble rebounding in the elimination game. The Tommies scored just three runs over their last 27 innings of region play.
St. Scholastica used a three-run homer in the fifth inning to build a 5-0 lead. The Tommies had a season-high three errors and left eight on base. Senior Reece Collins hits his first career home run in the eighth inning to end a 14-inning scoring drought on the day.
Senior Chris Bullis went 1-for-8 on the day and finished the season batting .489, a new Tommie single-season record.
Whitewater 4, Tommies 1, 10 inn.
St. Thomas couldn't capitalize on an excellent pitching outing by Matt Schuld as the top-seed Tommies lost 4-1 in 10 innings to No. 2-seed UW-Whitewater in Friday morning's NCAA regional baseball game in Oshkosh, Wis.
Whitewater (38-8) needs one Saturday victory to take the regional championship.
St. Thomas (34-8) must win three elimination games to take first place and advance to nationals, starting with a 4 p.m. Friday game vs. St. Scholastica.
In his first nine innings, Schuld (7-3) allowed an unearned run, two walks, three hits and one hit batter. He allowed in infield single to start the top of the 10th and was replaced by Dan Leslie, who was pitching just his second game of the season due to an arm injury. The Warhawks used a hit batter and pair of one-out singles to score the go-ahead and insurance runs.
Whitewater's Mike Jacobson (8-2) allowed no earned runs, no walks, four singles and struck out six in going all 10 innings. He retired 14 of the last 16 he faced, and the two runners both reach on errors. Leslie's one-out single in the sixth was its last hit. In the seventh, Salmen reached on a leadoff error and was bunted to second but was stranded on two ground outs.
The 10th-inning marked the first time UST trailed in six postseason games. Chris Bullis went 0-for-4 with a sacrifice and had his hitting streak end at 11 games.
