Softball slugs six HRs in sweep of Gusties

No. 5-ranked St. Thomas hit six home runs on the day and swept an MIAC softball doubleheader from visiting Gustavus Tuesday on a chilly day in St. Paul. The Tommies won 10-2 in six innings in game one, then won 11-1 in five innings in game two.

St. Thomas (21-3 overall, 6-0 MIAC) has won 38 in a row vs. conference opponents and 29 in a row on its home diamond. Senior Julie Mahre went 4-for-6 on the day with a home run for Gustavus (11-5, 1-3), which has lost three in a row after winning 11 consecutive games.

Sophomore Alison Wright homered in each game for the Tommies, and finished 3-for-4 on the day with three walks. Junior Missy Bruggeman went 4-for-4 on the day with a walk and three runs. Senior Olvia Graham hit two home runs in game two.

The Tommies have posted 35 homers in 24 games with 10 different players hitting at least one.

Senior Maria Bye worked six innings to get the mound win in game one. She improved her career pitching record to 73-8 overall (35-1 MIAC). Bye also had a three-run homer in game two.

In game one, Gustavus left seven on base and had two runners thrown out on the bases. In game two, the Gusties hit into two double plays and left three on base.

St. Thomas is scheduled to play Wednesday at St. Ben's and Thursday at home vs. St. Olaf in MIAC doubleheaders.
