The No. 12-ranked St. Thomas baseball team opened its 2008 season with a doubleheader split against St. Scholastica Thursday afternoon at the Metrodome. The Saints won 6-2 in the opener but UST won 6-4 in eight innings in game two.

Both programs have made the NCAA regional tourney and won 30-plus games in each of the last three seasons.

Matt Pexa's two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth plated the eventual winning runs in the nightcap. A two-out walk to Louie Salmen and Reece Collins' ground-rule double to deep center preceded Pexa's RBI hit.

CSS ace pitcher Adian Kummet retired the first 11 Tommies before UST scored four runs in the fourth inning. UST finished with 12 hits in the nightcap. Chris Bullis allowed a game-tying solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, but got the win with three innings of relief.

Saints freshman lefty Peter Berg allowed five hits, one walk and two runs in complete-game win in game one.

Freshman Taylor Rahm went 4-for-7 on the day to lead the Tommie bats, and Bullis was 3-for-8. Both UST starters had good 2008 debuts -- Erik Olson allowed two runs and six hits in four innings and left game one with the score 2-2; Matt Schuld allowed one run, three hits and six walks in game two in four innings and left with a 4-1 lead.

UST plays a Monday doubleheader in the Dome vs. No. 5-ranked UW-Stevens Point starting at 12:30 p.m.
