Junior forward Jessica Katch scored six of her game-high 21 points in a game-closing 8-2 run to lead the visiting Tommies to a 69-63 win at Concordia-Moorhead in Wednesday's MIAC women's basketball play in Moorhead.
St. Thomas (18-6 overall, 17-4 MIAC) secured a top-two MIAC finish and is assured of a top-three playoff seed.
The Toms, who have won seven of their last eight, can secure a tie for the MIAC championship with a win Saturday at home vs. first-place St. Benedict. They also can get a first-round playoff bye if Gustavus loses Saturday at home vs. Carleton.
Junior Chelsea Wirtz sank five treys and scored 17 points, and senior Carrie Embree had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her seventh double double of the season. Soph Sheena Porter-Wrzos had seven points, six assists and five rebounds. UST was outrebounded 34-27 but shot 45% from the field.
The Cobbers tied the score 61-61 with 1:57 left on Jenna Freudenberg's 3-point basket. Embree put UST back ahead with a basket with 1:25 left, and Katch scored with :31 remaining for a 65-61 lead. Katch was 4-of-4 at the foul line in the final 16 seconds to ice the win.
