St. Thomas had its season winning streak end at 18 with Saturday's five-set loss to Simpson in day two action at the Iowa-Minnesota Border Battle at UST's Schoenecker Arena and Coughlan fieldhouse.

The fifth-ranked Tommies won the first two sets but eventually fell to the Storm 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22 and 15-13.

The Tommies (20-2) rebounded later for a hard-fought 25-22, 25-22, 26-24 win over Central. With set three tied 24-24, kills by Lauren Wagner and Katie McCaffrey closed out the match. McCaffrey finished with 10 kills and two blocks; Kyley Crotty had 13 kills and eight digs; Katie Kremer had 22 digs; Emily Foster had 34 assists, two aces, two blocks and six digs; and Wagner had six kills.

In the earlier match, Simpson (16-9), which avenged a five-set September loss to the Tommies in its own tournament, broke to a 9-1 lead in the decisive fifth set. The Tommies roared back to tie the match at 9-9 and 11-11 but never took the lead.

Minnesota teams went 13-3 on the weekend, with all three losses going five sets.

St. Ben's (23-3) and Concordia (16-2) finished 4-0 on the weekend.

Iowa-Minnesota Border Battle Volleyball

The No. 5-ranked St. Thomas volleyball team ran its season win streak to 19 with two Friday three-set victories over Wartburg (Iowa) and Coe (Iowa) in the Iowa-Minnesota Border Battle. The Tommies topped Wartburg 25-22, 25-12, 25-14 and beat Coe 25-14, 25-17, 25-19.

UST plays twice Saturday -- against Simpson at 11 a.m. and against Central at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Both matches will have live audio webcasts at: www.mnsportsnetwork.com

St. Thomas senior Katie Kremer had 32 digs against Wartburg to become the MIAC career digs leader at 2,281 in 411 games. Katie McCaffrey added 14 kills and five blocks. Kyley Crotty had nine kills and 15 digs; Emily Foster had 43 assists and 12 digs. Kremer also had three aces.

In the victory over Coe, McCaffrey had 14 kills and five blocks and hit .700; Kremer had 16 digs and two aces; Foster had 40 assists; and Lauren Wagner had seven kills and two blocks,

No. 21 St. Benedict, now 21-3, beat Simpson in three sets and topped Central in five sets to run its winning streak to 15.

No. 14 Concordia-Moorhead, now 14-2, beat Central in three sets and Simpson in four. Cobber head coach Tim Mosser now has 300 career wins -- most in the MIAC. Concordia imptoved to 17-1 all-time in Border Battle tournaments through Friday.
