Softball goes 3-0 on Friday, caps 11-1 spring trip

The No. 1-ranked St. Thomas softball team hit six homers on the day and cruised to three more victories Friday to finish 11-1 on its spring trip to the Sun West Tournament in Orange, Calif.??
The Tommies (16-2) needed just five innings to beat Williams (Mass.) 8-0 and Elmhurst (Ill.) 12-1. They capped the trip with a 6-1 victory over Babson (Mass.). The Toms are now 16-2 in March with four games to play. Last year's team set a school record for March with a 17-1 start.??
Senior All-American Carrie Embree ran her hitting streak to 13 games as she went 7-for-10 Friday and finished with a .575 hitting clip (23-for-40) with 18 runs and 13 steals in 12 games. On the mound she was 3-0 with no earned runs, 14 strikeouts and one walk in 15.1 innings. Embree already has 31 hits in 18 games this season.??
Junior All-American Maria Bye had two pitching wins and homered twice Friday. She finished the week with 14 RBI, 13 hits, five homers, 11 walks and batted .448. In pitching, Bye was 8-1 with a 1.48 ERA, 75 strikeouts and 11 walks in 52 innings this week.??
As a team, UST hit .355 while foes batted just .164, and the Toms outscored opponents 83-16. The 11-1 mark was UST's best spring-break showing to date. The Toms are now a combined 71-18 in their last eight spring trips.??
St. Thomas starts MIAC play Wednesday with two games at St. Mary's.??
