Men's Hoops gets 85-78 win over Oles

Freshman guard Tyler Nicolai scored 20 of his 32 points in the second half as St. Thomas posted an 85-78 victory over host St. Olaf in MIAC men's basketball play Saturday afternoon in Northfield.
The No. 22-ranked Tommies (7-2 overall, 3-1 MIAC) moved into a second-place tie with Carleton, Gustavus and Hamline, one-half game behind conference leader Macalester (3-0).
UST shot 54% from the field, made 12-of-13 from the foul line, and had a 29-14 edge in bench scoring. The Toms led by seven at halftime. The Oles tied the game twice midway through the second half but never took the lead.
Nicolai canned 6-of-9 from 3-point range and 6-of-7 at the foul line. He scored nine point in the final 4:00 to help hold off the Oles (3-5, 1-3).
B.J. Viau had 10 points. Off the bench, Tommy Shimek had nine points and Teddy Archer had 10 points, four assists and four rebounds.
UST is off for four weeks until it plays Jan. 5 at home vs. Carleton.
