Women's Hockey starts season with 9-1 victory

Sophomore Kristine Beese scored two goals in a 17-second span and added an assist to lead the St. Thomas women's hockey team to a 9-1 victory over visiting St. Olaf in a non-conference game Wednesday night in Mendota Heights.
The season-opening win gave Tom Palkowski a victory in his first game as the Tommies' head coach.
Sophomore Lauren Bradel stopped 23 of 24 shots in goal for the Tommies (1-0). Freshman Kelley Fallen and sophomore Marie Omann each scored two goals. Sophomore Katie Carrico had a goal and an assist; senior Ashley Reinhardt and sophomore Rachel Zilles added goals; and junior Jackie Carroll chipped in two assists.
The Toms led 3-0 after the first 16:00, then broke it open with six goals in period two. Omann's short-handed goal 4:52 into the second period made it 4-0. Omann now has five short-handed tallies among eight career goals over 26 games.
The Toms made it 8-0 midway through the period as they blitzed the Oles with four goals in 90 seconds capped by Beese's two scores.
Katie Bennett scored an unassisted goal for St. Olaf (0-2). The teams will play their MIAC series Feb. 21 and 23.
St. Thomas plays Friday at UW-Eau Claire (7 p.m.). The Tommies open MIAC play Nov. 16 at home vs. Bethel.
