The St. Thomas men's soccer team had its season end with a frustrating 2-1 loss at Gustavus Wednesday in an MIAC playoff semfinal game.

Gustie senior Mike Butterworth scored in the 88th minute for the game winner -- two minutes after UST stunned the Gusties with a tying goal. Butterworth beat the Tommies, 1-0, with an overtime goal just four days earlier.

Gustavus (15-3-1) advanced to the playoff championship for the fourth year in a row. It will host fourth-seed St. Olaf, which upset top-seed Carleton, 1-0. The Tommies closed their season at 11-5-3.

Gustavus broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 48th minute. St. Thomas answered in the 86th minute on a goal by Thomas Gjervold, who played through an injured ankle. With overtime looming, the Gusties swept down field and got the game-winner with under 3:00 to go in regulation.

The Gusties had a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal and controlled the first 80 minutes of play. The Tommie goal was the first allowed by Gustie goalie Trevor Brown in 10 season games vs. MIAC opponents. It was also the first Tommie goal scored against a Gustie team since 2001.

St. Thomas played without leading scorer Joe Voeller, who was held out due to a non-academic eligibility issue.
