Women's Basketball gets 52-45 victory over Scots

Freshman guard Sheena Porter-Wrzos scored nine of her 12 points in the second half and host St. Thomas used a game-closing 26-15 run to post a 52-45 victory over Macalester in MIAC women's basketball play Wednesday night at UST's Schoenecker Arena.
The Tommies (4-3 overall, 3-1 MIAC) improved to 3-0 at home this season as they made 7-of-9 free throws in the final 1:07 to hold off the Scots (1-5, 0-4).
Macalester guard Danielle Johnson had a game-high 13 points with seven rebounds and five assists, and forward Elise Pagel had 10 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. The Scots had 21 turnovers and shot 35% from the field.
UST senior forward Meliisa Gotchnik had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and soph center Dee Prioleau had eight points and five rebounds. The Toms converted just 32% from the field, including 3-of-21 from 3-point range.
Macalester took leads of 12-4 and 18-12, but UST closed the first half with an 11-2 run -- including five points by Gotchnik -- for a 23-20 halftime lead.
The Scots used an 8-1 run to lead 30-26 with 11:40 to go. But Porter scored nine points to build a 45-37 lead with 2:29 left.
Mac pulled within 47-43 on Trina PaStarr's 3-pointer with 49 seconds left, but the Toms made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch.
The Toms are off until Jan. 3 when they play at Carleton.
