Men's Basketball gets 82-76 win over Saints

Senior Bryan Schnettler scored a game-high 23 points as the St. Thomas men's basketball team held off St. Scholastica, 82-76, in Friday night's semifinal play at the UW-River Falls tournament.

UST (7-1) plays UW-River Falls, a 110-66 winner over North Central of Minneapolis, in Saturday's 8 p.m. title game.

Schnettler made 4-of-4 at the foul line in the final minute after CSS had pulled within three points. The senior guard also sank two 3-pointers to fuel a 15-2 run that built a 60-47 lead midway through the second half. Schnettler made 5-of-7 treys and 8-of-8 at the foul line.

The Tommies, who played again without All-American center Isaac Rosefelt (illness), shot 55% from the field and converted 19-of-23 at the foul line to offset 17 turnovers. The Toms made 9-of-12 from 3-point range and outrebounded CSS 29-23.

The Saints shot 54% from the field and had four players score in double figures led by Brad Zupke with 20 points.

The Toms raced to a 17-6 lead but trailed 38-34 at halftime. CSS pulled within 66-62 with 3:47 to go, but Schnettler and Mike Keating each hit 3-point shots to build the lead back to eight with 2:29 to play.

Keating had 13 points and B.J. Viau had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Lonnie Robinson chipped in eight points, Brett Tuma scored seven and freshman David Baker had six points and four rebounds.
