Football falls 34-20 to Cobbers

St. Thomas gained 408 yards of offense but the Tommies closed the 2003 football season with a 34-20 defeat to visiting Concordia-Moorhead Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
Senior halfback Jeremy Hinderks rushed 14 times for 106 yards with touchdown runs of 3, 5 and 42 yards for the Cobbers (7-2 overall, 6-2 MIAC), who rolled up 473 yards of offense.
Cobber senior QB Ryan Hebrink broke the old MIAC record for career total offense in conference games, although Bethel senior Scott Kirkhoff passed him today to establish the new record. Hebrink completed 9-of-16 passes for 210 yards and rushed 22 times for 73 yards for a career total of 6,664 yards. Junior Andrew Passanante caught three passes for 95 yards, including catches of 46 and 41 that set up Concordia touchdowns.
Senior RB Nick Whitehead rushed 13 times for 101 yards for St. Thomas (3-7, 3-5), including a 21-yard first-quarter TD run. It was Whitehead's second career 100-yard game. Tommie senior RB Justin Kostner rushed 12 times for 78 yards and caught one pass for 56 yards and closed his career with 2,956 all-purpose yards and 22 touchdowns.
Sophomore QB Justin Lockrem completed 15-of-36 passes for 167 yards and an 8-yard scoring pass to sophomore Joel Korte. Freshman P.J. Theisen caught six passes for 41 yards.
The Tommie defense had five sacks, two by sophomore Ben Kessler. Sophomore linebacker Andrew Ubbelohde had 12 tackles and finished the season with 112 tackles in just nine games, one off a 15-year-old St. Thomas season record. Junior DB Paul Sommerstad had a game-high 14 tackles.
The Cobbers broke up six passes, three by Eric Svobodny.
Concordia closes its season next Saturday at Menlo (Calif.) College.
