Late rallly saves Blugolds
Kelly Kavanaugh's unassisted goal in sudden-death overtime lifted visiting UW-Eau Claire to a 3-2 win over host St. Thomas Friday in non-conference women's soccer play.
The Tommies (0-1), ranked 17th nationally in Division III, built a 2-0 lead on two goals in a 3:00-span early in the second half. Junior Jenny Murray scored in the 58th minute for a 1-0 lead, and freshman teammate Christine Williams scored in the 61st minute for a 2-0 lead.
But the Blugolds (1-0) pulled within 2-1 in the 70th minute on a goal by Marcia Foltz, assisted by Jullia Powell. Eau Claire's Kris Unterweger scored off a corner kick in the 83rd minute to forge a 2-2 tie.
Kavanaugh scored the game winner seven minutes into the first sudden-death period to end UST's seven-game home-field win streak.
The teams tied 0-0 in two overtime in 2001.
Megan Brady played the first 75 minutes in goal for the Blugolds and stopped 10 of 12 shots. Katie Eannelli stopped two shots while playing the final 22 minutes in net.
Jessica Christopherson stopped nine shots in goal for the Tommies.
