Jake Barkley's 196 rushing yards helps St. Thomas escape Macalester, 38-28
St. Thomas halfback Jake Barkley (SO-Plymouth/Robbinsdale Armstrong) had his sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing game as he rushed 23 times for 196 yards and two TDs in the Tommies' 38-28 MIAC football victory over visiting Macalester before a Homecoming crowd of 2,500 Saturday in O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
St. Thomas (4-3 overall, 4-2 MIAC), playing the school's 800th football game, remained in a third-place tie in the conference with Gustavus and St. Olaf. The Toms never trailed and led 14-3 at halftime but were outgained 474-390 yards by Macalester (1-6, 0-6).
Barkley, who had touchdown runs of 17 and 15 yards, became the first Tommie to post a 1,000-yard rushing season since ex-UST All-American Gary Tretttel did it in 1990. With three games to play, Barkley has gained 1,073 yards in six MIAC games and 1,138 yards in seven overall games.
The Scots attempted 56 passes -- 38 in the second half. Mac QB Aaron Quitmeyer (SR-Williston, N.D.) completed 30-of-54 passes 361 yards and two touchdowns. Ty O'Connell (JR-Helena, Mont.) caught 10 for 126 yards and David Schumacher (SR-Minot, N.D.) had seven catches for 70 yards. Grant Huett (JR-Pueblo, Colo.) rushed 14 times for 61 yards and caught three passes for 65 yards.
Tommie QB Nick Ambrasas (JR-St. Paul/Arlington) completed 6-of-11 passes for 147 yards and no interceptions, including TDs of 83 yards to Andrew Hilliard (SO-Woodbury) and nine yards to Mike Westland (SR-Albert Lea). Tommie Phil Remes (SO-Northfield) had a two-yard TD run in the opening minutes and returned a kickoff 66 yards that set up another first-quarter touchdown.
For Macalester, Nick Fruge (JR-Coon Rapids/Blaine) has 12 tackles and a sack and Andrew Porter (JR-Rogers/Elk River) has a sack, forced fumble and recovered fumble among his nine tackles.
For the Tommies, Rick Joslin (SO-Cambridge) had 12 tackles and a forced fumble and Andy Kaiser (JR-Mora) returned a fumble 50 yards and had five tackles.
